Like Magic (Short Story by Adupeola)

The first time they met was like magic.

Her friend, Lizzie, always pestered her about her never going out or letting any one in. She finally wore her down enough for her to agree to go on a double date. Lizzie was recently married. Her husband is a wonderful man. She couldn't have done better. But just because she got lucky, she shouldn't expect the rest of the female race to as well. She was so nervous and tried to find a reason to bolt at the last minute. For some reason, all her prayers went unanswered and she had to go.

She remembered getting to the restaurant. She was self-conscious. She took her time in getting ready and she was fashionably late. When she got to their table which had only 1 seat left, she was amazed at the fine specimen of male flesh that stood before her. She couldn't help wondering what was wrong with him and why he needed friends to fix him up with women.

He was tall and well built. He wasn't puffed up like most muscular men. He had lean muscles. His teeth were so white they shined whenever he smiled. He had a very endearing dimple on his left cheek. The dimple added to his boyish charm. Broad shoulders, big hands. She couldn't help her full perusal of him. The man's body begged to be looked at. He was oozing sexual appeal. His aura and energy not to mention his handsome features had the power to turn any intelligent woman into a babbling idiot.

By the time she met his eyes, she realized that he had been watching her study him. She quickly lowered her eyes. He came to her side to help her with her chair and while doing so, he leaned forward and whispered teasingly, "Like what you see?" She almost swallowed her tongue. After the introductions, she smiled still avoiding his eyes. She sat down awkwardly not daring to look at him again for the rest of the meal.

She only spoke when spoken to. Lizzie and Femi where expecting but it was still early yet. Lizzie was barely showing. You could read the excitement on the couple's faces a mile away. She was happy for her friend. She was also jealous. She wanted all that as well. She wanted happily ever after. "Samantha, we would love for you to be the godmother" "Really? I would love that!" She stood up and went over to hug her friend and her husband. "Thank you."

She spared Derek a glance. He was looking at her. She saw an emotion cross his face but she couldn't place it. The evening finally ended. Derek finally spoke and the question was directed at her. "Will you go out with me again? Just the two of us?" She hesitated. She looked at Lizzie and she was mouthing "Yes". She looked back at Derek,  smiled and said, "I would love that". The smile he flashed her could have warmed the coldest of hearts. "Great! I'll pick you up around 7 on Friday." She nodded. She gave him her address and number.

She declined the couple's and Derek's offer for a ride. She took a cab home. When she got home she soaked in the tub for a while. She arranged her things for the next day and she went to bed. She recalled Derek's face and went to bed with a smile on her lips. She was so going to love her dreams tonight.
